I hate the way these companies make their products sound healthy when in reality they are crap. This is fraudulent to me. The amount of salt in products like this is also bad for our kids.

I think there is a great lack of education on how to push for changes to happen more so than the general want for change. Yes, we have a new PM but the process for having your voice heard is so convoluted that many don't know where to start.

Our school canteen is gold accredited (which is hard to get) yet the rubbish it is still allowed to sell is quite ridiculous! @jamieoliver

Couldn't agree more! Watched your show last night about sugar and children. I honestly never want to give my daughter fizzy drink EVER. Very eye opening for sure

No part of this is healthy. Will admit I've tried them - they taste nice, obviously. But no nutrition what so ever.
caitlankadi
21.09.2015, в 10:44
Just because it says 98.5% FAT FREE doesn't mean it's healthy, that product most probably has a high amount of sugar in it and people need to be aware of that. Schools need to be aware of the food they serve to students, eating poorly can affect their health in the long run and lead to poor eating habits later in life. Students, not just primary but high school as well need to be educated about food. I agree with you @jamieoliver 100%.

21.09.2015, в 10:43
The issue is that they try to pass it off as healthy with all the claims on the side!!!

My point was.....show the ingrediants and let us make an informed choice?.....we know not to give our kids this food daily...

Not sold at our canteen!! We only have healthy options 😀

Love what you are doing @jamieoliver I support you and your initiative 100% they even make this nutritious cereal in a milk form so you can 'eat' on the go!!!! Have never seen in canteens however but know that plenty of Aussie kids would start their day with it 😏

@jamieoliver This! It is really a problem. I live in South Africa which even tops the USA for being the most obese nation. Here you can visibly see children getting fatter by the minute. Next door to us there is a six-year old who gets fed mostly sweets, and is still sugar buzzed at night when he should be sleeping. I am trying to quit sugar myself... it's difficult, I even get splitting headaches when I try. Looking forward to buying your book...

They serve up pizza and chips at my neice's school. So bad
indieskate
21.09.2015, в 10:38
@jamieoliver I think that the canteen approved is because they have no traces of nuts or something that causes an allergic reaction. But yes it is terrible that the government allows labels like this. They should do what they did for cigarette packages and put all junk food in generic packaging.
22samanthajane22
21.09.2015, в 10:37
This is not sold in government schools in Victoria Australia. Most schools have to follow a guideline that doesn't include that junk.

Canteen??? Don't we call it a tuckshop over here in Oz? Love your work @jamieoliver
laurennewman_13
21.09.2015, в 10:37
The canteen at my kid's school in the ACT has to comply with a new "healthy food policy"...it's improved the menu but parents let kids still choose to be unhealthy.

21.09.2015, в 10:35
This is a massive problem @jamieoliver and we all have a social responsibility to bring change to our society. School curriculum and education is key. Our food industry needs to be regulated under one central body. Global food manufacturers continue to use false marketing claims that mislead the public whilst sponsoring our national nutrition associations. What chance do we have when the truth continues to be swept under the rug.... I own a digital marketing agency and I want to help raise awareness but don't know where to start @jamieoliver
omnijective
21.09.2015, в 10:33
For anyone making negative comments about Jamie's association with Woolworths have you noticed what foods he is promoting? What recipes he's sharing etc through that venue? Healthy whole foods. Yes absolutely farmers markets and local are better but the reality is a lot of people shop at major chain supermarkets and the more healthy choices there the better

Our school has a chef who cooks all the food in a catering kitchen (on site). Would love you to come and visit. It's on the sunny Gold Coast. PM ME for the name of the school. X
myfoodiebaby
21.09.2015, в 10:33
It's not a suitable breakfast 5 days a week, so shouldn't be available in a school 5 days a week.it's not filling and due to the high sugar will give the kids a roller coaster of sugar highs and lows throughout the day leaving them craving more sugar later in the day to wake them up ...and then the cycle continues ... Their concentration and therefore learning will be affected another reason it shouldn't be in a school(!) canteen 😕
emmysmithy
21.09.2015, в 10:33
But its made with Real milk!
sarahkmaloney
21.09.2015, в 10:32
Perhaps the "school canteen approved" is actually a marketing gimmick? I've never heard of any school canteens selling Coco Pops these days. Maybe back in the 90's pre sugar education they were but I feel like school canteens have made a conscious effort to provide healthy meals for children and cut out all of these types of products. I could be wrong though...
fran_donati
21.09.2015, в 10:30
@jamieoliver I support what you are trying to do but good nutrition doesn't come from banning foods, taxation or pricing. It comes from educating adults and kids about what makes a nutritious diet, moderation and also explaining to them why they should or should not be eating certain foods. Banning certain foods can only make them more attractive. I also don't think the government should legislate for what we can and can't eat. I believe education is key. As is freedom of choice. We fought for freedom, let's not make a stand to the government and ask them to take it away.

Never ever heard of or seen such cereal sold in schools?! 😳
michellecortese
21.09.2015, в 10:30
I agree with all others commenting on your face of Woolworths status. I'd have thought Jamie Oliver's face would be better suited to promoting small and local. Guess they can't quiet pay you for endorsement like the supermarket giants can.

No school I know sells this @jamieoliver in our area . Our schools are pretty good and exceptional compared to USA and UK
vintage_wannabe
21.09.2015, в 10:29
I don't think I've ever seen that in a school canteen though. I think it's just a marketing ploy to make parents feel like it's okay to give it to their kids for a quick breakfast on the way out the door.

@jamieoliver thanks for what you are doing. I am Italian but I live in Ireland and often I feel like an alien when it comes to food. "If you are thirsty you drink water, if you are hungry you eat food" and then I teach my kids what food is. Very hard to eat well at home and then having the school supplying only sodas or milk (? In Italy milk is a meal, not a drink!) or vending machine with bars of crap 😒...it's frustrating.
christine_harada
21.09.2015, в 10:25
Yes everyone has a choice what they feed their kids but if you were educated about the impact garbage has on your system and how addictive sugar is you'd give them a healthier just as yummy option.... If sugar rots your teeth - just imagine what it's doing to your insides!
amymcinerney
21.09.2015, в 10:25
Yes. Our kids burn off energy and can probably process more sugar than us adults but there are far too many sugary foods marketed towards our kids. I, for one, do my best to teach my children about good food choices. However, the crazy amount of 'treat' foods being marketed towards kids makes it a frustrating. I am grateful that people like @jamieoliver are trying to improve the health of children. Comments like the one above just reinforce the need for change.

@jamieoliver maybe you should also speak to the major supermarkets to support in this country. Coco pops are on special this week. Why is unhealthy food for more affordable??
the0stallans
21.09.2015, в 10:24
Only crap so called "food" served at my children's canteen. Tried to advocate for change but not easy when 90% of the staff at school are overweight. So instead, only fresh whole food from home for my kids and they never complain because I have educated them about food from the toddler stage. 👌😜

You can't judge a single food product alone- you need to looks holistically at a child's diet and activity level. What it right for some is wrong for others and vice versa. Keep fighting the good fight @jamieoliver but don't over step your mark into prescribing nutrition or slamming an individual product without the correct information. Leave that to the professionals. 🍅🍈🍍🍒🍓🍎🍉🍆

All about balance @jamieoliver we grew up on this sort of food and are healthy and have no teeth fillings and turn 36 next month. Everyone has the right to choose what's right for their families balanced diets. Although I agree some people need more education ✌

Well done Jamie push away. Our kids are our future let's look after them and educate them on healthy eating as best as possible. You are being heard by the Australian public. Let's teach them about all the additives in foods and how toxic and poisonous they are. Put it in the Australian curriculum. One by one the haters will turn.

Autonomy is what makes it acceptable. Kids don't need to purchase from canteens, and removing options doesn't actually educate. It's up to the parent to educate their kids on when treats are acceptable and what they should be eating the rest of the time.

Waaaay too much sugar for this product to be acceptable food to feed to children - period! If people stop buying this rubbish to feed to their children at home - Kelloggs soon would get the message. Nearly all products labeled ..%fat free have an in excess of sugar - which is as bad if not worse that included fat. As sugar not used by the body just gets converted to fat!!!! Plenty of other foods to feed children at breakfast other than heavily sugared foods.

Low GI ??? WTF
dazboy10
21.09.2015, в 10:15
@jamieoliver Agree - but there's a "star system" here and a rival cereal gets 4 out of 5 stars because it has grains. This brand only gets 2 stars. Both high in sugar.

healthyeats_and_treats

@jamieoliver you have no idea about the crap that goes into the tables in Australia. So much need to change!!! People are unaware of what they are eating and there close to none regulation in food packaging, including the "made in australia from imported ingridients", or yesterday someone gave my kids a boxed juice, 20g of sugar for a 200ml apple juice yey had a 5 star rating....:(

21.09.2015, в 10:12
@jamieoliver help your audience out by not supporting the pop peddlers like Woolworths. You preach and then your mug is on some packaged item that people can pick up for dinner. Have you looked at their share dividends lately. Payout to person sitting on couch does not equal healthy, affordable food options or a considerate business for others.

Claiming that something is fat free should be reserved for foods perceived by the public as high fat. High sugar, high GI food which can easily be substituted for a better product. Food claims and public manipulation should be more carefully monitored in Australia @jamieoliver

It's better than a big m and is fortified with vitamins and minerals often lacking in the diets of students, especially in lower socioeconomic areas. Would a banana be better? Sure. But this being in the canteen doesn't negate the other options avaliable.

Crap has more nutrition in it, this is hollow crap. Also, in the UK why have we not banned calcium proponiate in mass produced bread, it's in everything and damages stomachs and has been linked to behavioural changes in kids and adults. All our mass produced food is full of crap!

Colourful packaging and an easy way to get kids to eat breakfast. I live in mount Lawley and am really impressed with the care that goes into the kids lunches in this area and even how kids eat what their parents do at "hipster" cafes (of which there are now loads!) it's great! It costs a lot less to prepare healthy meals too, but does require more organisation! I'm a new mum (as of 3 weeks ago!) and I plan to feed my Bub everything I am ok putting into my body. Good on you Jamie Oliver for bringing awareness globally into what we are actually fuelling our bodies with! x

Change food served in schools all you like, if the parents still give them all this crap when they go home, it won't make much of a difference.

It's actually terrifying that this is even considered 'food'. What is even more terrifying is the scores of people ragging on Jamie FOR TRYING TO SAVE PEOPLE FROM THEMSELVES!!

Thank you @jamieoliver !!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Milo is another big one here in Oz. It has the Heart Foundation tick of approval so people think it's good for our kids!!! 😑

Incredibly grateful that nothing of the kind is stocked in our school tuck shop. Instead we have locally made sushi once a week and a delicious, healthy, home cooked, organic hot meal once a week. Our tuck shop lady is AWESOME!!

Our school got voted the healthiest canteen in the zone. Which is terrifying, as it is terrible. And they are the only school who won't let me present a "healthy lunch box session" on behalf of the cancer council.

@jamieoliver watched "sugar rush" last night and it was so insightful. I will definitely be sharing it with my students during our health lessons next term. As a teacher I see students come to school that have had a breakfast that consists of chocolate and energy drinks. It is definitely all of our responsibility to teach kids about how food contributes to our overall health. Good on you for taking a stand and leading the conversations!!

And now they thank me for their perfect teeth and healthy bodies and attitudes towards food, without being fanatics.

Cool science.ca explains - " They use solid metal because other forms may reduce a product’s shelf life, and the particles are small enough that our stomach acid can break them down easily." Give me a steak instead any day!!

Well said Jamie - I wouldn't let that seducer into our house - I respect my 10 year old daughter too much. As for letting it into schools - we don't let cigarettes in

School foods are atrocious found out the other week my daughter's before school care was letting her have rice bubbles for breakfast and letting her put sugar on them. Was not impressed to say the least...

@jamieoliver you are absolutely right. Most things sold in canteens are unhealthy - this needs to stop!

It never hurt us growing up because our parents only gave it to us as a treat.. We spent most of our time playing outside on the trampoline, not inside on iPads..
