Marine 1st Lt. Therrel Shane Childers was 30 years old when he was killed in Iraq on March 21, 2003. He was the first U.S. serviceman to die in the Iraq war. • • I served with him at the American Embassy Nairobi, Kenya where we were assigned as Marine Guards to protect the Embassy and those that worked there. • • That Embassy was bombed/destroyed and no longer stands and many innocent people lost their lives because of it - including a Marine. During that time I thought about those friends of mine that I had lost and thought about how lucky I was to have narrowly escaped that bombing. I also gave thanks for those that survived and for the friendships I had made to include Shane. It wasn’t until years later just as my unit was almost done with our deployment to Iraq that I reviewed a list of Marines who had been KIA when I recognized the name. It’s a horrible way to learn someone you admired so much has been taken from this earth and at a such a young age. I give thanks everyday and have tried my best to live a life that is full, meaningful, purposeful and one that contributes to the memories of the amazing and outstanding caliber of humans I have met and have been led by. I don’t always succeed but I try and that I will always do. • • Rest in power brother, you and everything you have ever done for our country and it’s citizens will never be forgotten. • • #NeverForget #GoneTooSoon #SemperFidelis #USMC #Marine #Marines #MarineCorps #OIF #OEF #IraqWar #Veteran #KIA
